About Bulgaria

For tourists and property investors alike, Bulgaria truly has it all.
Situated in south-eastern Europe, it covers 110,550 square kilometers - slightly larger than Iceland or the U.S. state of Tennessee. It is located on the west coast of the Black Sea, with Romania to the north, Greece and Turkey to the south, and Yugoslavia to the west.
Considering its small size, Bulgaria’s landscape is very varied. Even within small localities the land may be divided into plains, plateaus, hills, mountains, basins, gorges and deep river valleys.
The country features alternating bands of mountains and valleys that extend east to west across the country. At the very north you find the Danubian Plateau, then move south through the Stara Planina (the Balkan Mountains), the central Thracian Plain, and finally the Rhodope Mountains. The landscape inland from the Black Sea is hilly, but becomes more mountainous as you move west. The Bulgarian landscape is blessed with endless beaches of white sand and crystal clear topaz waters, unspoilt mountain ranges and national parks, wonderfully quaint villages and sun drenched vineyards, relentlessly warm summers and snow blessed winters.
The country is also rapidly becoming one of Europe’s most popular skiing destinations, a winter wonderland that combines excellent modern facilities with breathtaking scenery – imagine skiing miles of fresh powder amid magical pine forests then unwinding in a hot tub with a glass of local wine and a view to die for!
At the heart of the Balkan Peninsula, the land-bridge between Europe and Asia, Bulgaria has also been centre stage for many of the world’s great civilizations, migrations and epochs. The result is a culture and history that is incredibly diverse, rich and colourful.
Archaeological finds around the town of Varna suggest that Bulgaria was the birthplace of Europe’s very earliest civilization. These include a host of gold artefacts dating back to 4,400BC , well before the great Egyptian and Mesopotamia empires were established. Since these spectacular beginnings the landscape has become littered with a wealth of architectural remains - Roman amphitheatres, Greek temples, Thracian tombs and Turkish fortresses, each with their own fascinating story to tell. Even those with no interest in religion will be enthralled by the sheer grandeur and architectural magnificence of the country’s 160 monasteries.
Thanks to the quirks of recent history this “Jewel of the Balkans” has been a well kept secret. But now all this is changing, and there has never been a better time to discover the unique delights of this magical, enchanting and welcoming country for yourself.
Ten years ago the idea of investing in Bulgaria was unthinkable. But since the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989 the fortunes of this country have been transformed beyond recognition - Bulgaria has emerged from the shadow of communism to become Europe’s new property hotspot. In just a few short years it has become an investor’s paradise where many Britons are picking up luxury properties for the price of a new car!
Tourists from all over the world are flocking here to sample the delights of this remarkable country, so there’s no shortage of demand for accommodation. The economy is booming and the government is investing heavily to improve the infrastructure. It has, for instance, poured £130 million into the mountain resort of Bankso to enhance the 65Kms of piste and install the most up to date equipment of any European ski centre. What’s more, when Bulgaria joins the EU in 2007 over £3 billion will be made available to accelerate this remarkable country’s already impressive rate of improvement.
Bulgaria’s property market is some way behind that of neighbouring Croatia, a country where prices have already caught up with those in Spain. This fact, plus Bulgaria’s wealth of natural attractions, wonderful climate, rich culture, imminent EU entry and rapid economic development all suggest that property gains of 200%-300% are not unrealistic, and that this upward trend will continue for quite some time. The opportunities are unrivalled, but the biggest gains will obviously be made by those that buy now, before the mass of people jump on the bandwagon.
